Ancillary Text 1.

I have changed my initial idea. The idea was to have a liquid pouring into text. This idea was not working and i could not seem to complete this. I have there for gone for a masked scrolling idea.

For my first ancillary text I have done a Channel Ident. I have picked this picture of a pie that looks like it has just been cooked. I have then put the title on in red so that it stands out. I created this in flash player and chose to animate the text. I did this by makin it scroll over the pie from left to right.

This has worked well, therfore I have completed my ident.

This post is two types of Information

Name of the Show.

60% of people asked to look at my blog have choosen the name Cookstien Clerk. I think this is a professional name, and also brings in what the website is about. I am happy with my audiances decission and am ready to continue with the creating of my website.

Ident Progress So Far.

This is my first ident attempt. I have had alot of help doing this and I am going to progress it more. I choose of some thing pouring into the thext which would make it visible. I did this because baking and cooking involve alot of pouring, therefore I think this is suitable. The green squares in the back ground where created to show that an image or two may be in this area. The text will also be changed as soon as I have decided on a name for my channel and website.

Saturday, 11 December 2010

The banner

The site banner will have an image along with some text.
I am undecided as to what image I will use for my site. I think an image of either;
Some food that has been cooked;
Some kitchen utensils;
A shot from a video on my site; or
An image of a cook that appears in my site or the cook from my video.

Web site made in I.C.T

This web site was done in my Applied I.C.T class and took a long time and a lot of concentration. I made this website in dream weaver and used images found on the Internet. The task I am doing now requires me to have my own video, imagery and own information. This may take a while longer as I have to make everything before I continue to the concentration of my site. I also need to find a host so people can view my website when it is completed.

Conventions of Ident

For T.V Idents there are many things that have to be included in the making of one. There are things that also have to make the ident memorable to the viewers and also entice them into the channel. The aspects such as the density of information, timing, tempo and viewer interaction have to be carefully constructed. most idents last only a short time and this is apporximatly 30-40 seconds.

Technologies that support my video on line.

Real Player; RealPlayer is a closed source cross-platform media player by RealNetworks that plays a number of multimedia formats including MP3, MPEG-4 and more.

Flash Video; Flash Video is a container file format used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player versions 6–10. Flash Video content may also be embedded within SWF files. There are two different video file formats known as Flash Video: FLV and F4V. The audio and video data within FLV files are encoded in the same way as they are within SWF files. The latter F4V file format is based on the ISO base media file format and is supported starting with Flash Player 9 update 3.Both formats are supported in Adobe Flash Player and currently developed by Adobe Systems. FLV was originally developed by Macromedia.

Quick Time;QuickTime is an extensible Proprietart multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc. Capable of handling various formats of digital video, picture, sound, panoramic images and interactivity. It is available for Mac OS classic (System 7 onwards), Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems. The latest version is QuickTime X (10.0) and is currently only available on Mac OS X v10.6.

Windows Media Video;Windows Media Player (abbreviated WMP) is a proprietary digital media player and media library application developed by Microsoft that is used for playing audio, video and viewing images on personal computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system, as well as on Pocket PC and Windows Mobile-based devices. Editions of Windows Media Player were also released for Mac OS, Mac OS X and Solaris but development of these has since been discontinued.
In addition to being a media player, Windows Media Player includes the ability to rip music from and copy music to compact discs, burn recordable discs in Audio CD format or as data discs with playlists such as an MP3 CD, synchronize content with a digital audio player (MP3 player) or other mobile devices, and enable users to purchase or rent music from a number of online music stores. Windows Media Player replaced an earlier application called Media Player, adding features beyond simple video or audio playback.

DivX; is a brand name of products created by DivX, Inc. (formerly DivXNetworks, Inc.), including the DivX Codec which has become popular due to its ability to compress lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality. There are two DivX codes; the regular Mpeg-4 Part 2 DivX codec and theH.264/MPEG-4AVC DivX Plus HD codec. It is one of several codecs commonly associated with "ripping", whereby audio and video multimedia are transferred to a hard disk and transcoded.

Audiance Research

For my audiance research I have hosted a poll on my blog. The questions I asked where; What would you rather cook? The response to this was that 62% of people asked prefer to cook a cake, 38% of people like to cook Soups, Starters and Main courses. Are you one for cooking? The response i got from this one was 83% said yes they are for cookingand again 16% said no they are not ones for cooking that much. What is your age group? The response i gain from this was one i wasnt expecting at all. I thought most people would be of the younger age group learning for when they moved out or maybe went on to a university. My answer where; 16% where aged 0-16 50% where aged 17-25 33% where aged 25+ My final question was are you Male or Female? This reply was again most shoking as i thought it would be majority female however 50% male and female viewed my blog. This has helped me as I now know who I am aiming my website or T.V Channel at. I shall aim it at a mid aged audiance those who are in university or leaving home. This is about ages 17-30. I think any one can learn to cook at any age.

This is a video on how to cook a chocolate cake. The first thing I noticed that the vieo maker did was introduced his ingrediants. He then explains what he is doing and why he is doing it. He then shows us what we are doing and how we are to do it, he shows us the starting product and then how it is meant to look hen he has done what he intended to. He also shows us what we are to do and how to do it. This helps the viewer if they want to make the cake as they can see it step by step. The camera is situated close to what he is doing and shows only what he is doing and not on himself. While he is making the cake he is talking to the camera.

This video has given me an idea how to creat mine however the cake being made in my video is going to be different and I am going to try and create the video in silence and i'm going to try a voice over which will be slightly different.

Layout of pages.

This is how I am intending my site to look. Each box contins some thing different.

(Hand drawn draft to be scaned in)...

This is my navigation system and i have created a little key in the bottom corner.

In my navigation web there are many ovals and each one is a different page. The only ones that are not a page of their own would be the ones with the hyperlinks in. These will be on the page about the chefs and the hyperlinks will be some where on this page. These are the official sites.

Thursday, 4 November 2010

Now I have analised 3 websites of the kind I aim to make, I have to make a navigation stystem. I will do this on Inspiration and it will look like a spider diagram. I aim to link each page back to the home page so this will make navigation alot easier and also use less of thje users memory space.

Website Analysis 3.

Channel 4 (Cooking It). URL; http://www.channel4.com/life/microsites/C/cookingit/index.html

This website is different as it has a small box in the top right corner asking the viewer what they want to look at. When the user has decided where they want to be, another navigation bar appears down the left hand side. This is slightly unconventional as the navigation bar is across the top and has a spry menu dropping from each section.
This website has a lot of information however when a new page is loading it does not let you know. This may then cause the user to get impatient with the site and end up causing a problem. When I clicked on a link to a recipe it went red however made no sign of changing pages. It took about 4 minutes before the page actual refreshed and reloaded.

This website is has a lot of colour at the top of the page and appropriate imagery to go with its purpose. However as we go further down the page the content slowly disappears and he screen becomes dull. The advertisement on the top of the page is annoying as it pops open when ever the mouse hovers near.
On some pages the navigation bar is quite dark and this then brings a slight dullness to the site. This has made me think of adding a bit of colour to mine when I create my own as I would not want to deter people from exploring.

When I was exploring this site I could not find any error and I was not alerted of any. Another thing I think I will change for my site is the fact that everything is all in one column and all so close and over fills the page. This site keeps all options open to the viewer as the small vertical spry menu on the left is there no matter what you want to view. This also helps to keep the users memory space free for other uses.

The usability of this website is very well and then the user can interact with the website fast. I think there is an accelerator hidden in the creation of this site as the videos upload fast and play as soon as the reader demands “play”. Another factor that make me think there is an accelerator is the fact that when you choose to change page the site take 5seconds to do so and also refreshes the URL.

This website has a search engine for the user to find specific items and also to get to places they want to be. When the user clicks on the food tab at the top of the website the page refreshes and opens up a section of the site about food and recopies. This then also has its own search bar for recopies. This website has very good terms and uses language very well. It does not use any technical terminology so the user can read the site well and fluently. This site is also very good for user interaction as it has videos and gives the user an opportunity to download application, such as the free Jamie Oliver timer.

Analysis of website 2.

Website URL; http://www.jamieoliver.com/

This website is constructed very poorly as it does not let you know when another page is loading, however when you click on a link it can load quite fast which means there must be an accelerator within the site. This site also refreshes when the user clicks on a link or searches for their own recipes.

This site has many links which could be easily clicked on and this could then annoy the user if they are not what is wanted. For example Jamie Oliver's site lets you join his Facebook group and follow him on Twitter. This is not what every one wants however this problem is easily resolved. When you click on the links to Facebook or Twitter a new window opens up and this is then easily closable there for the error made by you is then resolved. However when you click on a recipe or a link to something within Jamie's site that is about Jamie or his cooking the site just refreshes to the new page. The only way to get back to the page u was on is either click the back link arrow on the internet page or go to home and then find your way back from there.

This website is good for a reader’s memory space as it keeps all the options on show and in the same space every time the page changes. When a reader looks at this text it is easy to follow as it is paragraphed and also lets you see what you want. This site runs quite quickly which may suggest that there is an accelerator within the site. This site is straight forward and lets you know what you are looking at and is simple to follow. Each article, story, recipe, and gallery has its own page and headline. They are also set separately by a coloured back ground or a headline that is pale blue with a pale blue line underlining the mast head of the article.

This website also helps the user with their memory space. The navigation bar does this job by staying in the same place with the buttons and text in the same order. If there is some thing on the home page that interests the reader of this site then it is easy to access however if they are looking for a recipes to cook from they would have to choose either one. If a user choose to look at the recipes and still wanted to look at the video it would be in the same place when they went back.

I have looked around this site and no problems have been see however I think if the site had any mishaps or errors it would explain in plain English to the user what to do and what not to do. The site i suspect would use no code and hopefully just tell the user straight. The images on this site are also very good quality and the videos are also very good. They show the reader exotically what they want to see.

Jamie Oliver’s site is consistent right through and has subtle colours which will not put the reader off. This site is also very easy to navigate around, even those who have not visited the site before could use this site and get what they want. This site has another easy way to navigate around and this is shown by the heading “SHORTCUTS”. This is at the bottom of the web page and constantly on al the others.

Analysis of Website.1.

Website URL; http://www.charmcitycakes.com/

This web site is all about cakes and has many pages. The navigation bar lets me navigate my way around the site easily and when I want to change page the link stays bold and gets slightly larger as I click it. This lets me know that the website is working towards my needs. This also lets me know that the site is working and trying to load what I want. I now know not to get impatient as it is doing what I want.

The navigation bar across the top of the website is all about getting me where I want to be. This is set out in a conventional way as contact us is the last thing you would expect to see on a website. The entire navigation bar also follows conventions as when you look on most sites the gallery or the about pages are the first that you would look at. On this website when the user clicks on a link that either takes you off this web page or onto another site altogether it opens it in another window. This is then easier to escape as the solution is to close this separate window that has appeared. However if you close a link that has been opens in another window then the only way to redo is to click on the link back on the original website.

This website is very consistent. The text is one colour right through the site; the head banner is also consistent through the site. The head banner is blue with the text cut out in white. Another consistent feature on the Charm City Cakes site is that the main story or feature albeit the gallery is on the left hand side of the page and two linking stories are on the right and a pale orange box. This website is good for a reader’s memory space as it keeps all the options on show and in the same space every time the page changes. When a reader looks at this text it is easy to follow as it is paragraphed and also lets you see what you want. This site runs quite quickly and when changing images there is a little loading circle which shows us its loading the next image.

The Charm City Cakes site also keeps its information to the minimum. This is because they want to keep the readers attention. This site has little white space around as it is only short pages where needed. There is only one long page this is the "ORDER/FAQ" page. There are a few different sections and each one is about some thing different, and separated by a thin orange line. The title of each section is also separated by orange lines and the text again is black and easy to read. The images on this site are all very clear and show what goes on in the shop there are no videos or any thing the user can attract with. This site has a separate page for help and information. This is called “ABOUT” and has an average amount of writing upon it. This amount of writing is suitable as too little will loose readers interest and too much will put them off.

Charm City Cakes is ran from a server that is not theirs. Their website is create and ran by Mission Media. This may be why the website runs faster and could possibly explain the acceleration of the site.

Codes and Conventions of Websites.

Jakob Nielsen has 10 Usability Heuristics. They are called Heuristics because they are suggestions of things to consider than orders to abide by. These are the ten general rules for user interface design.

  • Visibility of Systems Status; The system should always tell the user what is going on so that they don't become inpatient with the system.

  • Match between system and the real world; The system should use terms and language the users know. It should use real world conventions and appear in a correct order.

  • User Control and Freedom; If a user clicks on an unwanted connection there should be a clear way back to the original site. This means easy undo and redo.

  • Consistency and Standards; Things should be easy to understand, straight forward and constant.

  • Error Prevention; Evan though there are error messages that pop up there should be a system that prevents the error from even occurring. The system should search for errors before the user continues to the site, and then it should still give them an option or alert them a error may occur.

  • Recognition rather then Recall; The options should be clear at every point of the site. This will help the user minimize their memory load. This is because they will not have to remember one thing to another. Instructions for direction and use of the system should be clearly shown and also visible where ever the user is on site.

  • Flexibility and efficiency of use; This could be an unseen device seen device by the user of the programme. This could be an accelerator for example, it could often speed up the interaction of the system and could also boost the rate at which the computer runs.

  • Aesthetic and minimalist design; The programme should not have any written text that is not necessary or rarely needed. It should also minimize the amount of unneeded text to free up space the more relevant stuff.

  • Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors ; When a problem is found they should be explained to the user in plain language no coding. They should also explain how to resolve the problem of automatically try to tackle it.

  • Help and Documentation; Although a lot of sites use documentation for help this often gets in the way of what we want. This information should be either hidden away, or made smaller for the user to look for. How ever nothing should go wrong on the site so help information should not be needed much.

History of Internet

The purpose of the internet when first created in 1962 was to address the US Military's concern about survivability of their communications networks. As their first step they inter-connected computers in the Pentagon. J.C.R. Lickider was selected to be head of the Information Processing Technology Office (IPTO). Later Lickider's sucessor Ivan Sutherland got Lawrence Roberts to start a project to make a network. This is when the United States Air Force recommended packet switching oposed to circuit switching for a better network robustness and survivability.

After much work, the first two nodes of what would become the ARPANET were interconnected between Kleinrock's Network Measurement Center at the UCLA's School of Engineering and Applied Science and Douglas Engelbert's oN-Line System (NLS system) at SRI International in Melno Park California, on 29 October 1969. The third site on the ARPANET was the Culler-Fried Interactive Mathematics centre at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the fourth was the University of Utah Graphics Department. In an early sign of future growth, there were already fifteen sites connected to the young ARPANET by the end of 1971.

However people also say the Internet was the result of some visionary thinking by people in the early 1960s who saw great potential value in allowing computers to share information on research and development in scientific and military fields. J.C.R. Licklider of MIT, first proposed a global network of computers in 1962, and moved over to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in late 1962 to head the work to develop it. Leonard Kleinrock of MIT and later UCLA developed the theory of packet switching, which was to form the basis of Internet connections. Lawrence Roberts of MIT connected a Massachusetts computer with a California computer in 1965 over dial-up telephone lines. It showed the feasibility of wide area networking, but also showed that the telephone line's circuit switching was inadequate. Kleinrock's packet switching theory was confirmed. Roberts moved over to DARPA in 1966 and developed his plan for ARPANET. These visionaries and many more left unnamed here are the real founders of the Internet.

The internet today uses Transmition Control Protocol (TPC) and Internet Protocol (IP), these where researched and and engineerd by computer scientists Robert Eliot Kahn and Vinton Gray (also know as Vinton Cerf).

LIIAR;

Language: Language in the media industry is specific terminology used to describe something like a magazine front cover, web page or any media text. Examples would be the different conventions used to do this.

Institution: The institutions in media are organisations, companys that produce media products. E.g; Magazines, web pages e.g. BBC and ITV. For this task I will be the institution as i am the one hosting the website.

Ideology: Ideology is a set if ideas that constitutes one's goals, expectations and actions. An ideology can be thought of as a comprehensive vision, as a way of looking at things, as in common sence or a set of ideas proposed bt the domaint class of a society presented to all members of this society.

Audiance: Consumers of media -"Buyer". The audiance of a media text varies from each media product. The artist or designer of the media text aims for and audiance, this is then resarched by questionairs or polls. The institution that produce may also only design for a specific audaince. The audiance of my website or T.V Channel would be idealy students of either college or universtiy. Adulst who are interested in cooking would also be interested in wathing videos on my website.

Representation: Representation refers to the construction in any medium of aspects of reality such as people places objects cultural identities and other concepts. These representations may be in speech, writing as well as still or moving picturse. All media text have a representation of something, youv'e just sot to look.

Brief

I have been requested to make a website for a new TV channel. This is to include a minimum of three hyper-linked pages with original images, audio and video extracts. I also have to include two of the three following;
  • a newspaper advertisement for the channel.
  • a double page spread for a listening magazine, focused on the channels launch.
  • an animated idnet sequence for the channel.
I have chosen to do the first two. Which are a newspaper article and a double page spread aimed to show the channel's launch.
